The Customer

Everlane is an iconic digitally native apparel brand committed to exceptional quality, ethical production, and radical transparency. The company relies heavily on data to optimize everything from merchandising and logistics to marketing and customer experience. A lean data team, led by Madhuri Gupta, Senior Manager of Data & Analytics, supports nearly every department with real-time metrics and operational insights. “Everyone in the company — finance, marketing, logistics, retail, CX – relies on the reporting we power to make daily and strategic decisions”

The Challenge

Before moving to a fully managed Astro environment, Everlane’s data team was burdened with managing Airflow infrastructure on AWS and Kubernetes. This meant maintaining auto-scaling groups, provisioning EC2 clusters, handling networking issues, and debugging errors in Kubernetes — all without dedicated DevOps support. When something broke, it often required days of trial-and-error and combing through logs just to identify the root cause. “We were managing the infrastructure ourselves, and whenever something went wrong, it could take days or even weeks to resolve. That’s time we’re not building data pipelines,” said Gonzalo Pena, Senior Data Engineer. As the scope of their data work grew, this model introduced unacceptable risk to project delivery timelines and mission-critical workflows.

The Solution

Everlane adopted Astro to offload infrastructure management and streamline orchestration across their 70+ Airflow DAGs. The switch to a fully hosted Astro environment consolidated billing, improved cost predictability, and reduced operational overhead. According to Madhuri, “It was a seamless transition — we experienced no downtime, and the Astronomer team handled the migration end-to-end.”

With DAGs supporting everything from core revenue metrics and inventory tracking to churn prediction and third-party data delivery, Astro plays a foundational role. It acts as the connective tissue of Everlane’s modern data stack, integrating source systems like GA4, Everlane’s e-commerce platform, inventory and warehouse systems, third-party tools like Attentive, and various SFTP- and API-based data feeds with Snowflake and Looker for downstream analytics. By standardizing orchestration within a single environment, the team can confidently manage dependencies, monitor performance, and ensure data arrives where it’s needed, when it’s needed.

“Astro is a great product. It deserves recognition for being so reliable and so solid.” Madhuri Gupta Senior Manager of Data & Analytics

Developer Efficiency & Environment Consistency

Astro also simplified onboarding and development by centralizing environment variables and secrets management. “It used to be a pain to spin up local environments. Now, it’s seamless,” noted Gonzalo. Previously, each developer had to manage their own local builds using shared secrets and manual configuration, which often led to inconsistencies and wasted time troubleshooting environment issues. Local images wouldn’t always match production, and even small changes could cascade into hours of debugging. With Astro, the team now references a shared deployment image and manages secrets centrally — dramatically reducing setup time and improving reliability across the development lifecycle.

The Results

Everlane’s migration to a fully managed Astro environment delivered immediate and measurable outcomes. With mission-critical data powering nearly every department, the team needed reliability, speed, and simplicity — Astro addressed each of these needs with tangible improvements across infrastructure, cost, and team productivity.

Improved Operational Efficiency: Eliminated hours of manual infrastructure and troubleshooting work, freeing engineers to focus on pipeline development and accelerating team output without increasing headcount. Everlane also realized a 25% cost reduction by consolidating their infrastructure with Astro.

“Astro gives us peace of mind. We don’t worry about infrastructure. We focus on delivering data.” Madhuri Gupta Senior Manager of Data & Analytics

Increased Reliability & Reduced Risk: Business-critical DAGs now run with >99% uptime. Major outages are a thing of the past, ensuring timely, uninterrupted data delivery across the business.

“When a critical DAG goes down, our stakeholders feel it. With Astro, that doesn’t happen anymore.” Gonzalo Pena Senior Data Engineer

Governance at Scale: The transition to hosted Astro led to simplified platform management and enabled Everlane’s lean data team to support over 70 DAGs across multiple functions with consistency and control.

“We have DAGs running everything from core metrics to churn prediction, inventory, marketing performance, CX, and more. It’s all standardized and managed from a single platform – Astro.” Madhuri Gupta Senior Manager of Data & Analytics

What’s Next

Everlane is in the midst of two foundational changes: migrating its e-commerce platform to Shopify and transitioning warehouse systems. “Astro is already touching both projects. We’re building new DAGs for Shopify events and warehouse pipelines in parallel with active operations,” noted Gonzalo. Looking ahead, the data team plans to explore an upgrade to Airflow 3.0 and further modernize legacy DAGs to support backfills and scalability. These investments ensure the team can respond quickly to business needs and continue scaling with confidence.
