# Astro for VS Code overview

> Learn about Astro for VS Code, the extension that brings Otto, your Astro Deployments, and your local Airflow into VS Code and Cursor.

<Info>

</Info>

Astro for VS Code is an extension that brings [Otto](/docs/astro/otto/otto-overview), your Astro Deployments, and your local Apache Airflow environment into VS Code and Cursor. You write, run, debug, and push Dags from the editor where your code already lives.

* *Find and fix failures without switching tools.* See each Deployment's import errors and failed Dag runs in the sidebar, read the task logs in an editor tab, and hand the failure to Otto in one click.
* *Work with an agent that knows Airflow.* Otto reads and edits the files in your project, runs commands, and shows each file edit as a diff. By default, Otto asks for your approval before it changes anything.

Astronomer publishes the extension to the [Visual Studio Marketplace](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=astronomer.astronomer-vscode) for VS Code and to [Open VSX](https://open-vsx.org/extension/Astronomer/astronomer-vscode) for Cursor. To install it, see [Get started with Astro for VS Code](/docs/astro/vscode/vscode-quickstart).

## Features

The extension adds an **Astro** view container to the activity bar, with four views, and an Otto chat that opens as an editor tab.

| Feature | What you can do |
| - | - |
| [Otto chat](/docs/astro/vscode/vscode-otto-chat) | Ask Otto to write, explain, or fix Dags. Attach selected code, files, or images, approve each edit, and resume or export past chats. |
| [Deployments view](/docs/astro/vscode/vscode-deployments) | See import errors and failed Dag runs for each Deployment in your Workspace, read task logs, push code, and wake or hibernate development Deployments. |
| [Local view](/docs/astro/vscode/vscode-local-airflow) | Start and stop your project's local Airflow in standalone or Docker mode, read component logs, and see local import errors and failed runs. |
| [Docs view](/docs/astro/vscode/vscode-docs-search) | Search Airflow, Astronomer, and provider documentation, add a provider to `requirements.txt`, and insert an operator at your cursor. |
| Profile view | See the account, environment, Organization, and Workspace the other views use, and switch between them. |

For Deployments and local projects that still run Airflow 2, the extension shows when support for that version ends and starts the upgrade to Airflow 3 with Otto. See [Upgrade to Airflow 3](/docs/astro/vscode/vscode-deployments#upgrade-to-airflow-3).

## How Astro for VS Code works with other Astronomer tools

* **Otto**: The chat in the editor runs the same Otto as `astro otto` in a terminal, with the same models, skills, memory, and [permission rules](/docs/astro/otto/otto-permissions). It doesn't use GitHub Copilot or Cursor's built-in models, and doesn't require a Copilot subscription.
* **Astro CLI**: The extension uses the [Astro CLI](/docs/cli/v1.46/overview) for every action that changes state, including signing in, switching Workspaces, pushing code, and starting local Airflow. It doesn't store credentials of its own. If you sign in with `astro login` in a terminal, the extension uses the same session, and the other way around.
* **Astro IDE**: The [Astro IDE](/docs/astro/ide-overview) is a browser-based workspace hosted on Astro. Astro for VS Code works in your own editor, with the files on your computer.

## Requirements

* An [Astro account](/docs/astro/trial).
* The [Astro CLI](/docs/cli/v1.46/install-cli).
* VS Code 1.95 or later, or Cursor.

You don't need to install Otto separately. The extension installs it with the Astro CLI the first time you open a chat.
